An unexpected nomination for the Hampshire Sports Awards

Following my attendance at the Eastleigh Sports Awards, I received an email yesterday from the Sports and Active Lifestyles Manager at EBC to say that I’d been nominated by EBC for an award at the Hampshire Sports Awards for my role as Event Director at Eastleigh parkrun!! OMG!

It would be amazing to be shortlisted for the ‘Senior Volunteer’ award!

Eastleigh parkrun which started in May 2010 with about 50 runners brings together runners of all abilities and ages from across Hampshire each week. We’re likely to exceed an attendance of over 300 runners within the next month or so (our current attendance record is 290 runners) and we’ve built an amazing community around the event.

With 3315 registered runners at the event and approximately 30 new runners each week, the free event has gone from strength to strength,

The event caters for runners aged from about 4 to 84 and from novice runners taking 45 minutes or more to complete the 5km course to Olympians (GB 400m record holder, Iwan Thomas, is a regular parkrunner at Eastleigh) taking about 17 minutes. The event is fully inclusive and we regularly see runners with strollers and dogs when using our summer course at Lakeside Country Park.

We’re very fortunate to be supported by many running clubs in the region who not only participate at the event but also regularly provide teams of volunteers (each event typically needs between 12 and 20 volunteers). Many thanks must go to Eastleigh Running Club, Southampton Athletics Club, Winchester & District Athletics Club, Stubbington Green Running and Athletics Club, Lordshill Road Runners and LA Fitness Running Club for their continued support.

As well as the event each week, we have a very active community presence on Twitter and Facebook.

Winning the award would be great recognition for the event and the amazing team of run directors (Neil, Henry, Dave, Deb and Berni), volunteers and participants we have.

Details of the awards are available at I’m very proud to have been nominated by EBC. It would be great to be shortlisted by the awards committee on the 15th February. Although nominations are closed, there’s an email address on the awards page which could be used to support the nomination.
