Cycling. The new running

Back in the middle of May, I posted about my rest from running. That rest continues.

Over the last 3 and a half weeks, I’ve only run a couple of times. To be honest, I never thought I’d stop running for so long. I’m no longer injured (experiencing no heel pain at all) after having taken 3 weeks off before my first couple of short runs.

So, what’s my excuse? I’m enjoying cycling. In fact, I’ve been enjoying it so much, I’ve retired my 15+ year old mountain bike in favour of a road bike.

Believe me, it’s made the world of difference!! When I first started cycling in May, my ‘route’ of approx 12 miles took me an hour (11.9 mph). Over the course of a week, I managed to shave 2 minutes off of that time (12.9mph). However, on the road bike, I cycled the route in approx 50 minutes (14.9mph). Clearly, the lack if knobbly tyres, a more aerodynamic riding position and a much lighter bike all play a difference.

My target is to get to 17mph! Not sure how long that’ll take.

From next week, the plan is to run and cycle. Haven’t quite decided the precise details yet but something along the lines of:

Monday – Intervals
Tuesday – Cycle
Wednesday – LSR
Thursday – Cycle
Friday – Easy run + cycle
Saturday – Tempo
Sunday – Rest
